Practicing Still Life PhotographyWhat to shoot Still life photography is probably the easiest thing to practice as your subject can really be anything you choose and they never complain. Look around your house for inspiration and you are bound to find something that you can practice on. Flowers are always a good place to start and you can either pick a few from your garden or just go and buy a bunch, practice shooting from all angles, with different lighting and maybe even isolating one particular flower using a shallow depth of field. Food can also be interesting to shoot, try starting with a few pieces of fruit or a tray of cakes, you can use anything you have hanging around and sometimes you will be surprised at how good your shots will turn out.
I found these old antique spoons lying in a drawer, this is one of many photos that I took on a rainy day.
These are some wooden balls that usually sit on my table, for this shot I placed them on top of a mirror and included the reflection in the photo.
I spent hours taking photos of my friends grand piano but liked this close up of the keys best of all. Sometimes just shooting the detail makes for a more interesting photo.
Don't even ask because I don't know how I came up with this one, I was looking for something to practice on and they fell out of the cupboard! I really will take photos of anything.
For this photo I emptied a jar of star anise onto a black lacquered surface, which is actually a piano lid. I loved the way they reflected in the shiny surface.
I don't know why I even thought of taking a photo of a bike tyre, it was just there at the time, and seemed like a good subject. It really doesn't matter what you choose when you are staring out, it's all good practice and when you finally do find something interesting you will have the knowledge to get great shots every time. Digital photography allows us to take as many shots as we like at no extra cost, unlike film photography, so just keep snapping anything you see and you will start to notice you getter better and better every time. |
