Advanced Settings for DSLR Camera's

P,S,A and M Modes

Once you have mastered the basics of photography you may want to start using some more advanced setting, in this chapter I will briefly explain the functions of P,S,A and M Modes. These modes will give you more control over the camera and allow you to adjust the setting and capture images in different situations.

P mode (Programmed Auto) will automatically set the shutter speed and aperture to give you the correct level of exposure, this is a good mode to use when you are in a hurry and need to quickly take a shot and don't have time to manually adjust the settings. You still have some level of control in this mode and using the command dial you can make adjustments to the shutter speed and aperture without changing the overall exposure.

S mode (Shutter Priority Auto) will allow you to choose the shutter speed but the camera will automatically change the aperture setting to gain the correct exposure. You can choose a fast shutter speed to freeze motion or a slower shutter speed to get a blurred image.

A mode (Aperture Priority Mode) will allow you to change the aperture settings but the camera will automatically change the shutter speed to gain correct exposure. In this mode you can choose how much of the shot is in focus and create images with either a blurred background or have everything in the shot in focus. See depth of field for an example.

M mode (Manual Mode) this mode will allow you to take full control over the camera and adjust both the shutter speed and aperture setting.
